Our Founding Fathers were a moral and religious people. Not perfect by any means, but imperfect fallible humans who revered God, His word, and creation. Men and women committed to prayer and worship and living a moral life. They were also bound by but not limited to the custom and conventions of their time, just as we are bound by but not limited to conventions of our time.
Most of our Founders were members of the various Christian denominations of their time, Congregationalists, Anglicans, Quakers, Roman Catholic, Lutherans, Dutch Reformed, and Moravian. A religious people guided individually by a moral code. A higher moral code that is in practice ultimately a personal choice. Living a moral life was not only healthy for one’s community, but at the individual level was considered inseparable from living a happy life.
Our Founders were able to protect and perpetuate religious freedom by codifying its free exercise in the First Amendment of our Constitution. They could not however codify moral behavior. To that our Founders left to the Providence of God and posterity.
JOHN ADAMS “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” (Message from John Adams to officers of the First Brigade of the Third Division of the militia of Massachusetts, 10-11-1798)
GEORGE WASHINGTON “While just government protects all in their religious rights, true religion affords to government its surest support.” (Washington’s address to the Dutch Reformed Church, 1789. The Writings of George Washington, John C. Fitzpatrick, editor, 1932.)
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN “Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.” (Quote 04-17-1787. The Writings of Benjamin Franklin, Jared Sparks, editor, 1840.)
So it is that leftist progressive socialist Marxists must pry an independent people from the center of their allegiance and decision making—they must separate people from their moral code. To accomplish their agenda of control, God must be replaced with another god, a man-made god, i.e. the government. So long as We The People revere God and His commandments above all other authority the socialists cannot have the control they desperately desire. We need only look to history to reveal the not-so-secret formula they employ to accomplish their ends.
Here is the sequence of steps socialist governments follow in order to pry morality and God from a free people:
1) First, they allow immoral services (such as legalizing abortion) in the name of freedom.
2) Then they dis-allow moral services.
- First they use the tax code to penalize a moral people—people who threaten their socialist control.
- Then they disqualify groups of people from social services (think Jews in Germany 1938).
- Then they pressure private companies to cut off services to groups of people.
3) Third, they create laws prohibiting moral behaviors that threaten their socialist agenda. Perpetrators are vilified in the media, arrested by police, and sentenced to jail by judges.
On this 4th of July Independence Day, I am reflecting on the source of my personal independence—my reliance on God. And, the great sacrifice of many thousands of men and women who secured our nation’s independence from an oppressive controlling monarchy.
Our enemies tempt us. Confuse us. Instill doubt. Indoctrinate ignorance. Offer immorality for morality. Our enemies abound, foreign and domestic. Slowly and systematically they eat away at the foundation of our lives, liberty, and property. They want my life. They want my liberty. They want my property. To do so, they must replace God, appointing themselves as benevolent king in an all-controlling omnipotent government—for “our own good.”
We ARE the posterity of our Founders!
To our enemies, to you I say, I will not surrender this ground. Come, but you shall not pass before me.
God bless America.
