Sticks and Stones

The Left screams, “Tea Party members are racist!”  Which is blatantly false.  I hate to dignify this charge with a response.  However, it may be constructive dissecting why the Left lobs these incendiary accusations at constitutional conservatives and those who even appear to look “conservative.”

It may be helpful if I describe what they the Left see—how they see us constitutional conservatives.  Having been a Leftist, let me take you into their world and describe how they see you, the constitutional conservative, through their eyes.  I was in their camp, one of their own.  I’ll be your spy.

First of all, know that the Left is not just saying constitutional conservatives are racist.  They are not saying it to be inflammatory.   The Left truly believes it.  Leftists believe we conservatives are inherently racist—that our conservative values spring forth from this bigotry, and conservative constructs in society protect us from races we supposedly fear and hate.  It’s in our DNA, a Leftist would explain;  constitutional conservatism is a mental illness.  Sort of an ignorance without cure.  (Which has very important and dangerous implications.  But that is for another article.)  For now, just know in their eyes, you are a racist.

Second, know that the Left believes they are smarter than you.  So much so they believe they know what’s best for you.  Generally, Leftists have college degrees or spent time in college.  College is a breeding ground for Leftist thinking and thinkers.  The point is, Leftist believe they are more enlightened than you the conservative.

Generally you’ll find Leftists are urban dwellers.  They aren’t rural folk by and large.  There are a lot of Leftists on the east coast, west coast, and in Chicago.  Big cities.  Near colleges usually.  They like to be at the hug of cultural affairs, the arts.  They like to be plugged-in to national and global news and events.  As a result, they think themselves more culturally literate and well-informed than the “average” person.  They like to feel important.

This is, by the way, why Leftists are naturally drawn to vocations in academia and media.

With that in mind, this is how the Leftist, socialist, Marxist, liberal sees you the constitutional conservative.  (These will be images that are stereotypical, middle America, and do not obviously apply to all conservatives, nor do they exclude all liberals.  I use these images to make a point.)

Image #1:  A mom and dad dressed up sitting in church pews with their kids for Sunday service or Mass.

What the Leftist sees:  Brainwashed parents forcing another generation of kids to endure an hour of superstitious non-sense.  Weak minded.  Their time would be better spent working the soup line at a homeless shelter.  Looks like a white church, so they’re racists and conservatives.

Image #2:  A diner in rural America.  In the parking lot, some cars and trucks.  Full-size pickup trucks, old and used, well-worn.  NRA stickers on back windows.  Diner full of patrons.  Many men in plaid flannel shirts and white t-shirts, ill-fitting blue jeans, and dirty baseball-style hats with high crowns and company logos.  Work boots.  Some beards.  Maybe a couple small families in for a late breakfast of eggs and bacon and pancakes, if it’s a Saturday.  Country/Western music playing overhead through an old PA system.

What the Leftist sees:  Racist redneck conservatives.  Is this an NRA convention?  Cultural arm pit.  Blue collar.  Uneducated do-nothings with knuckle-dragging vocabulary.  Stuck on stupid.   Last book these hillbillies read was in high school, if they went to high school.  Pickup trucks scream redneck.  And that slow whiney music?  Only a dim-wit could enjoy country/western.

Image #3:   A 60 year old woman at a Tea Party rally in Washington D.C. wearing an over-sized shirt with an American flag printed on it, holding a rally sign.

What the Leftist sees:  Racist and conservative.  A woman who has been told what to do her whole life by her overbearing, lazy, bigoted, beer-belly husband.  She doesn’t even realize how silly she looks in that tacky shirt.  And that hair coloring looks terrible.  Probably shops Walmart.

Image #4:  A old World War II vet visiting the WWII memorial in Washington D.C.  He and other vets are wearing caps embroidered with their branch of service.  Service pins/medals pinned on front of caps.

What the Leftist sees:  All old people are racists and conservatives.  Sentimental old coots who live in the past, draining Medicare dollars.  Probably doesn’t own a computer, let alone know how to turn one on.

Image #5:  A black man at a Tea Party rally.

What the Leftist sees:  Uncle Tom, as are all conservative black men and women.  He got brainwashed by white people into thinking he is a free man.  Probably came from an affluent white suburb and was not exposed to the “truth” of his “oppression.”  He got rich before he got smart.

Image #6:  A father and son at the shooting range, shooting rifles, wearing ear protection and eye protection glasses.

What the Leftist sees:  (This image is a little harder for me to see through the eyes of a Leftist because I was raised with guns.)  Rednecks raising rednecks.  Racist and conservative.  Looking silly in their shooting get-up.  Another gun nut who thinks he needs a gun.

Image #7:   Waitress working, pregnant, smiling, wearing hair style from 10 years ago, has a southern drawl, unknown if married.

What the Leftist sees:  White trash.  Ignorant.  Racist and conservative.  Too stupid to know she has no future and no reason for smiling.

That’s how the Leftists see those images in real life, on tv, or in print.  It makes me feel sick writing the above passages because I used to harbor those very thoughts about those images.  I’m ashamed.  Ashamed of my pride and arrogance.

Now I’ll tell you what I see in these images today through my eyes of a constitutional conservative.

Image #1:  A mom and dad dressed up sitting in church pews with their kids for Sunday service.

I see a man who took the time to shave and dress up on his day off out of respect and humility for his creator.  I see a mom exhausted from a full week of work, now having gathered up the kids, got ‘em in their Sunday best, having refereed all their fights on the way to church, monitoring their childish fidgeting in the pews. All this to give praise to God, and plant the seed in each child a sense that God loves them, and their lives have meaning and purpose.

Image #2A diner in rural America.

In the parking lot I see work trucks.  I know when I walk inside I’m going to see men more concerned about doing good than looking good.  Working men providing for their families.  Folks who wisely know the value of common sense.  Sure, every person in that room wishes they’d win the lottery.  They have dreams and hopes.  Some realized, some not.  But they get up each morning with the dignity knowing God loves them no less than God loves me and you, or the well-to-do brokers on Wall Street, or the captains of industry, or powerful congressmen, or the so-called “enlightened” college professor.  We don’t have titles of nobility in America.  When I hear the country/western music, it will belie otherwise proud hard-looking men more truly tenderhearted.

Image #3:   A 60 year old woman at a Tea Party rally in Washington D.C. wearing an over-sized shirt with an American flag printed on it, holding a rally sign.

I see a woman who never imagined her country was so turned around backwards that she’d have to join or organize a political rally, particularly at her age.  I see patriotism.  And boldness of spirit.  I see a woman meeting and making new friends, enriching her life and others in the spirit of love of country.

Image #4:  An old World War II vet visiting the WWII memorial in Washington D.C.  He and other vets are wearing caps embroidered with their branch of service.  Service pins/medals pinned on front of the caps.

I see a man who has lived long with sorrows of war.  A man remembering friends and family members lost in a great cause, imagining what kind of the lives the fallen would have led had they lived.  And still asking himself all these years later had he acted with valor.  I see a man who not only survived the Great Depression, but then called to serve his country!  When I see this man, I see the Greatest Generation.

Image #5:  A black man at a Tea Party rally.

I see a courageous independent man.  I see a man acting on his conscience in the face of ridicule and derision by a multitude of those who share his racial heritage but not his conservative values.  I see a man who sees truth, and is willing to defend it.

Image #6:  A father and son at the shooting range, shooting rifles, wearing ear protection and eye protection glasses.

I see a father taking time out of his busy schedule to spend time with his son.  I see the love of a father, sharing his time and skills.  I see a boy who will remember these moments forever, long after his dad has passed away.  I see a responsible caring parent who spent extra money to protect his son’s ears and eyes as necessary for the activity they enjoy together.

Image #7:   Waitress working, pregnant, smiling, wearing hair style from 10 years ago, has a southern drawl, unknown if married.

When I see this image I see the beauty and power of women.  I see a woman with courage before a great blessing and great responsibility.  I see a woman humbly serving others and finding joy where God has her today.

Constitutional conservatives are no more racists than Leftists.  Whites are no more racists than blacks.  Rural folk no more racists than city slickers.  Middle America is no more racist than the “left coast.”  High school graduates are no more racists than college graduates.  Blue collar workers are no more racists than while collar.  Pickup owners are no more racist than Prius owners.

Let the Left make their charge.  Sticks and stones…

Eventually their pride and arrogance will fail them.
