Thursday, September 3rd, 2015, Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis was arrested and jailed on charges of contempt of court. Mrs. Davis refused to obey a federal judge’s orders to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
Mrs. Davis refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses on the grounds doing so prohibits her 1st Amendment right to freely exercise her religion. Kim Davis is a Christian who believes same-sex marriage is a sin and contrary to God’s will; she refuses to condone the practice of same-sex marriage by affixing her signature on the marriage license.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage is a civil right.
Republican presidential candidates are weighing in on the controversy.
SUPPORT (Believes Kim Davis has the right to refuse issuing same-sex licenses based on her religious beliefs, and her Constitutional protection thereof. The argument is, the law of the land is morally wrong and civil disobedience is made necessary to change it. As Sen. Ted Cruz argued on the Fox News Kelly Show, if Mrs. Davis cannot keep her job, it logically follows no person of religious conscience can hold a government job. )
Sen. Ted Cruz
Sen. Rand Paul
DO NOT SUPPORT (Believes Kim Davis must obey U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage, and that she is compelled to either issue the licenses or resign her job. None of the following candidates support Mrs. Davis’ hasty arrest.)
Gov. Chris Christie
Sen. Lindsey Graham
I believe the “Supporters” and “Do Not Supporters” are BOTH wrong.
Why in the world do so-called conservative Republicans keep fighting over worthless scraps dropped from the table of Progressivism! Drives me crazy. Are we so far gone from our Founding moors we’ve completely lost sight of the banquet of liberty? Instead, we relegate ourselves to the indignity of prizing Leftist food scraps? Cruz and Fiorina are fighting over worthless morsels unfit for dogs.
The government has absolutely NO authority over the issue of marriage—not gay marriage, not straight marriage, not even polygamy. Marriage is strictly a religious matter. The government has NO authority to issue marriage licenses. None.
This is why we have controversies today like gay wedding cakes, same-sex marriage licenses—the government has inserted itself where it does NOT belong. Just like it always does. More government always leads to more conflicts among the governed. Are we not arguing more and more?
Our 1st Amendment says: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof….” The government must stay OUT of religion. That’s why our ancestors came here! To flee a government that did not stay out of religion.
When Thomas Jefferson wrote in a letter “separation of church and state” he was saying keep the government OUT of religion, not keep religion OUT of government. Indeed without the moral compass of religion as exercised by people elected to office America would have devolved and scattered into selfish, self-destructive hamlets of hell fighting for meal scraps left us by “generous well-intentioned” secular Progressives.
In that order.
